REMEMBERING........

Photobucket

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar;
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
Fin which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

LEAVES OF FALL 2009.....

I got outside today and did a little work. I thought maybe I should take some pictures of our trees before more rain and wind comes our way. These are just a couple of the picture I took

I am fortunate enough that all I have to do is look outside our windows..or hop on our four wheeler and trek thru our woods...I don't have to drive anywhere to see such beauty, I have it right here all around us.

I love the Fall Season best of all, but in my mind and heart, a little sad...as Winter will be here very soon and our Nature will be sleeping...the cold winds of Winter will be howling and snow will be blowing

My wish for you today is that you take a little time to enjoy Nature, before it goes to sleep for the Winter

COUNTRY LIVING.....

As most of you know we live on a fairly big parcel of land, out in the country on a dead end road, with no neighbors....closest being about 2 miles away.

I love the peacefulness, the time spent sitting on the front porch, listening to nature all around us. My most favorite sound are the mocking birds of the night, calling back and forth to each other. I could listen to that all night.

I love to take walks in the woods, never knowing what just might cross my path..be it a deer, coyote or even a turkey.

I love the coolness of the creek, looking for different colors and shapes of rocks. It is a joy to me watching my grandchildren when they come for a visit...to play in the water and try to catch a crawdad or a fish..to explore nature.

I love the mowing of the grass, the caring of the goats, guineas, chickens and dogs....even the hard work my hubby and I have put into this place and to look back and say we accomplished that job...now what job do we do next? Granted, the work was tiring at times..and sometimes we thought we would never get it done, but for two old people, we manage.

I love to smell of the honeysuckle in bloom, the freshly mowed hay fields, the newness of the early morning, the smell of a bonfire at night.

I love to see the dogwood trees in bloom and the colors of the leaves in the fall.

I love being able to look at the sky at night and to see millions of stars, to enjoy the coolness of the night after a hot and humid day.

After all this has been said, there are things I don't like about country living, as nothing ever is 100% for the good....like snakes, bugs, the occasional electric power outages, having to drive so far to the nearest town. But, I walk out my door and see nature around me everywhere and it is worth it all.

We think, in our minds, we own this parcel of land, but in reality, we are just the caretakers of it all.....caring for it as best we can. As years go by, we look back of all the things we have done....and hoping for just one more day....

Take the time to stop and smell the roses along your path...

NEW ADDITION TO MY HEN/GUINEA HOUSE....

A week ago last Saturday, we went to a sale and I finally purchased the chickens I have been looking for. I have been searching for Buff Orpington Chickens for some time. A Mennonite man had 12 pullets for sale. I decided to get them all. So all I need now is a Buff Orpington Rooster.

So far, I am enjoying this breed of chickens....a very peaceful, calm bird. The chickens are smaller than my guineas, but they will grow fast I hope and soon we will have fresh eggs.

They are getting along with my Guineas, if fact I think the Guineas are a little fearful of the chickens, but I don't know why. Tonight, just about time to roost in the hen house, there were three chickens laying and standing in their doorway. The guineas so wanted to go in, but I could tell they didn't want to push their way thru the chickens. They finally did all go inside, except for one guinea tonight.....he roosted up in a tree. So hopefully he will be waiting in the morning at the door, wanting to be with his family.

NEW GUINEA & CHICKEN HOUSE......

This is what Hubby and I have been working on the past month. Finally got our Guinea & Hen House built and even have some new residents living in it. My house is 7 1/2' by 14'...with roosts, nesting boxes and a nursery...and even electricity...comfort for any feathered friend.

I wanted to get some Guineas to free range here to enjoy their daily search for bugs, ticks and weed seeds. I received my 12 Guineas a couple of weeks ago, so far they are doing well. They have to stay locked up in the house for about 6 weeks so they will learn that this is their home. After that period of time, I can release them, hoping they will have learned this is their home and not try to find their old home.

I hope to get some baby chicks soon as the lady I called said she will be having a new hatch just any day...I have picked Buff Orpington Chickens for our multi-purpose chickens....eggs and meat. I have my brooder ready for them. I am patiently waiting their arrival.

Will keep you posted on my newest adventure on our homeplace...

ANOTHER YEAR OLDER...A LITTLE MORE GRAYER....

Photobucket

Well Friends, another birthday for me today. I am so very thankful to have made it another year in this life. Today, I thought of all the things I have done in the past and the family that I have....I treasure my family most of all...as my things can be took up in a tornado tomorrow.

I look in the mirror and see a little more grey hair, but I will not be like most and color it, I feel I have earned this grey hair..it is a honor I wear proudly

A beautiful day it is here in the country, I will be spending my birthday outside today, working alongside hubby building a new Guinea/Hen House.

If you recall from my past posts, I am a simple woman, not ever trying to ask for much....so today is no different....just another year older.

I will post pictures of our Guinea/Hen House as we get it finished.....working on the roof today.

Until Next Time....

I AM A WOMAN.....

I am a woman....a plain and simple woman, not asking for much from anyone.

I have a good life, a simple one, my way of life is by choice. People need to learn that all the worldly goods in their lives are not always the best way to be.....a simple life, just comfortable enough, not too many ~THINGS~ to burden you down....just enough to make a house, ~A HOME~...all the glitz and glamour, does not make a real person...it's what you are inside....what is in your heart and how you treat others. We are here to help our family first, then our friends.

My treasures in life are my girls...my daughters...my jewels....and will always treasure them no matter what. I am old now and they are all grown up and on their own....I, as a mother, want to protect them from all harm, but I know they must go on and live their own lives...I wouldn't want that any other way...they need to spread their wings and fly. I try not to get in their way, but I am here for them whenever they need me.

They need no help from me, no money, no roof over their head..as they have their own money and roof....as they are all very well on the road to life...I feel I have done my job as a mother, even though I wish I knew then, when they were little girls, what I know now about life. But I will continue to be in the background of life, hoping for continued good things to come to them all.

My daughters are also my best friends

I hope I have made footprints well enough to follow in life......have you?

CAMPING WITH THE FAMILY....

Our Family all met at Clifty Falls State Park in Indiana this year.....We had a great time, great weather, just wasn't long enough of a stay for me.

We do this every year, pick a place to go and all who can come, we camp out and enjoy the great outdoors.

We enjoyed the falls at the park and drove to Madison and visited a the SaddleTree Manufacturing Museum...loved all the old machines and the vintageness it offered. We walked the streets of Madison, admiring the old buildings, watched a boat parade on the Ohio River, hiked to 3 of the four falls and to the Overlook Tower of the Ohio River, the kids went swimming....and of the evenings, we enjoyed our campfire, good food, the night's coolness and the gathering of our family. We saw deer, turkey and snakes....could have done without the snakes.

A great time had by all....

OUR GRANDDDAUGHTERS, ELIZABETH AND LEXI....

Our granddaughters from Ohio, Elizabeth & Lexi are staying with us this week.

PaPa got the big tractor out and cut down all the tall weeds in the roads for us to go to the creek. The girls and I got the four wheeler out and rode down to the creek to spend the better part of a day down there catching little fish, a crawdad and a tiny little frog. Then they decided to play in the creek, (just had to have their swim suits on) so back on the four wheeler we go to get our swim wear on. Back down to the creek, played in the water trying to get little sister wet...but I think they had lots of fun.

On our way back to the house, all of us on the four wheeler, a coyote crossed right in front of us. Lexi and I saw it, but Elizabeth didn't being she was in back of me.
We have a lot of coyotes around here as we hear them most every night.

Then another day we took the girls to Dinosaur World. I think they had a good time, digging for treasures and walking to see all the different dinosaurs.

I think they are enjoying their stay with Granny and PaPa...I know we are enjoying the girls with all their little songs, giggles and artwork they are doing.

STEPHANIE'S TRIPLE IRSH CHAIN QUILT.......

I was at my youngest daughter's home last week and took a picture of this quilt I made for her and her family maybe 5 years ago.

A Triple Irish Chain Queen Sized Quilt. I love the colors: tea dyed tan, shades of brown and beige. I hand quilted this one...I love this quilt and hope to make one for my collection soon.

Been working on another for her, it's on the quilting machine frame now...ready for quilting. Will post a picture of it when it is done. This one will be a prize winner I think....150 Stars..I was so glad to get all the stars made.

HERE'S ANOTHER OLD RECIPE OF MINE.....

It's been a very busy past week for me, I am glad we are having a rainy day today, so I can get a few things done around here.

I don't have my quilt that I have been sewing on finished to share with you yet, so I decided to make some stuffed bread. All my prim sistas in Kindred Sisters Gathering have all been talking about their stuffed bread they have been making. That stirred up my thoughts of years gone by again, as I made a stuffed bread when my girls were young. I think my girls liked it, I know I do....so here you go dear friends.....another old recipe of mine from years gone by......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BREAKFAST SAUSAGE BREAD
2 LOAVES (1 POUND EACH) FROZEN BREAD DOUGH
1 POUND BREAKFAST SAUSAGE
2 CUPS FRESH MUSHROOMS, SLICED AND DICED
1 ONION, CHOPPED
3 EGGS
10 OZ. (2 1/2 CUPS) SHREDDED MOZZARELLA CHEESE
1 TEASPOON DRIED BASIL
1 TEASPOON DRIED PARSLEY FLAKES
1 TEASPOON DRIED ROSEMARY, CRUSHED
1 TEASPOON GARLIC POWDER
ALLOW DOUGH TO RISE. IN A SKILLET COOK SAUSAGE, ADD MUSHROOMS AND ONIONS, COOK UNTIL SAUSAGE IS BROWNED AND VEGETABLES ARE TENDER. DRAIN. COOL. BEAT ONE EGG SET ASIDE
TO SAUSAGE MIXTURE ADD TWO EGGS, CHEESE, AND SEASONINGS. MIX WELL.
ROLL EACH LOAF OF DOUGH INTO A 16 INCH X 12 INCH RECTANGLE. SPREAD HALF OF THE SAUSAGE MIXTURE ON EACH LOAF TO WITHIN 1 INCH OF EDGES. ROLL JELLY ROLL STYLE, STARTING AT A NARROW END. SEAL EDGES. PLACE ON A GREASED BAKING SHEET.
BAKE AT 350 DEGREES FOR 25 MINUTES. BRUSH WITH BEATEN EGG. BAKE 5 TO 10 MINUTES MORE. SERVE WARM.
ENJOY~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Until next time friends, think I will climb those stairs and do some sewing on my quilt now....have a great day!!

GET THE MILK OUT, HERE'S A BATCH OF COOKIES......

I have been wanting to make a batch of cookies lately, finally got around to it today since it's so nasty outside...almost 80 yesterday...in the 30's today with rain & snow. Ole Man Winter just doesn't want to go away.

This recipe is another one of my recipes I have had for a very long time. I used to make these for a neighbor friend of ours when we lived in Missouri. He sure loved receiving a plate of these, wouldn't even wait for me to leave to eat them, just sat right down and started in on them.

These are a simple cookie, nothing really fancy about them, but they are one of my most favorite of all, great with a cup of hot tea or coffee...for the kiddies, a big glass of ice cold milk.

I hope you find the time to try this recipe out someday...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~LEMON SUGAR COOKIES~~
1 CUP BUTTER
1 CUP SHORTENING
3 CUPS SUGAR
4 EGGS
1 TEASPOON LEMON EXTRACT
2 TEASPOONS VANILLA EXTRACT
5 1/2 CUPS FLOUR
4 TEASPOONS CREAM OF TARTAR
2 TEASPOONS BAKING SODA
1 TEASPOON SALT
SUGAR FOR ROLLING
CREAM TOGETHER BUTTER, SHORTENING AND SUGAR. ADD EGGS, LEMON EXTRACT AND VANILLA EXTRACT; MIX WELL. ADD FLOUR GRADUALLY. ADD CREAM OF TARTAR, BAKING SODA AND SALT. BEAT UNTIL WELL BLENDED
SCOOP A HEAPING TEASPOON OF DOUGH AT A TIME AND ROLL IN SHALLOW BOWL OF SUGAR. PLACE ABOUT 2 INCHES APART ON UNGREASED COOKIE SHEET. (I PREFER TO USE PARCHMENT PAPER)
BAKE 9 MINUTES AT 400 DEGREES UNTIL LIGHTLY BROWNED. YOU CAN MAKE COOKIES LARGER OR USE TINTED SUGAR FOR COLOR
~~ENJOY~~
ANOTHER QUILT FINISHED......
I got this one done last night, so I thought I would share a picture of it with you all.
As I am a lover of all things Prim and love the Fall Colors, I decided to use all fall colors in this quilt with some black print and black solid fabric, along with some tea dyed tan for the background the each fan.
It's name is: ~~GrandMother's Fan~~a queen sized quilt. I think I might enter this in the Local Quilt Show next month if we are here for it. If we aren't here at that time, I will find another to enter it in. I hope it will win like my Feathered Star did last year..the first time I have ever entered a quilt show and won second place. Hard to beat those Antique Quilts.
I will keep this one..and some day pass it on to one of my dear daughters.
I hope you enjoy looking at this quilt as much as I enjoyed making it.
~~Kathy~~
