As most of you know we live on a fairly big parcel of land, out in the country on a dead end road, with no neighbors....closest being about 2 miles away.
I love the peacefulness, the time spent sitting on the front porch, listening to nature all around us. My most favorite sound are the mocking birds of the night, calling back and forth to each other. I could listen to that all night.
I love to take walks in the woods, never knowing what just might cross my path..be it a deer, coyote or even a turkey.
I love the coolness of the creek, looking for different colors and shapes of rocks. It is a joy to me watching my grandchildren when they come for a visit...to play in the water and try to catch a crawdad or a fish..to explore nature.
I love the mowing of the grass, the caring of the goats, guineas, chickens and dogs....even the hard work my hubby and I have put into this place and to look back and say we accomplished that job...now what job do we do next? Granted, the work was tiring at times..and sometimes we thought we would never get it done, but for two old people, we manage.
I love to smell of the honeysuckle in bloom, the freshly mowed hay fields, the newness of the early morning, the smell of a bonfire at night.
I love to see the dogwood trees in bloom and the colors of the leaves in the fall.
I love being able to look at the sky at night and to see millions of stars, to enjoy the coolness of the night after a hot and humid day.
After all this has been said, there are things I don't like about country living, as nothing ever is 100% for the good....like snakes, bugs, the occasional electric power outages, having to drive so far to the nearest town. But, I walk out my door and see nature around me everywhere and it is worth it all.
We think, in our minds, we own this parcel of land, but in reality, we are just the caretakers of it all.....caring for it as best we can. As years go by, we look back of all the things we have done....and hoping for just one more day....
Take the time to stop and smell the roses along your path...
